Owner Profiles: Dave Bell

Editor's Note: This is the ninth in a series of feature stories on the men who make up the Erie Fantasy Football League. In order to be featured, you must respond to the official Erie League survey.

Bonecrushers GM Dave Bell has done just about everything there is to do in the Erie League.

Bell's accomplishments range from second place in all-time victories (64) to first in single-game scoring (138 vs. the Assassins in 1996). He has also captured two division titles ('94 and '95) and appeared in the playoffs six times in seven seasons. However, according to Bell, he'll never be satisfied until he can guide his squad to that ever elusive Fantasy Bowl championship.

"I've had a lot of fun doing this, even when the Browns were in town," he said. "But my greatest moment is yet to happen."

That moment will have to wait at least one more year thanks to a dismal 1997 campaign by the Bonecrushers. After scoring 102 points in their season opening victory, Bell's squad proceeded to drop eight games in a row.

"This season sucks big time," Bell said. "In fact, my suckness knows no boundaries this year. I have always relied on a good draft to carry me but pulling the 16th slot is about as much fun as pulling the one slot in a league this big -- just ask the Bees..."

The 55-year-old Executive Vice President and co-founder of Great Lakes Power in Mentor calls Donikers GM Sam Profio, a fellow Great Lakes V.P., a top rival.

"That pecker head" he said. "You would think he'd have a little more RESPECT for his mentor. Eventually I'm going to pound the dago into submission! I'm just setting him up right now."

As one of the league's charter members, Bell has seen his share of rivalries with plenty of other owners as well.

"All of the charter members are great rivalries as are some of the later owners such as Vince, Thomas, and Pavelich," he said. " Of course the Kuratko boys, Damicone, and my son Mike (Assassins GM) keep me pretty interested too. I really want to go after Keith since he has the all-time most wins.

"Just remember, you heard it here first. What goes around comes around and those guys are going to get theirs!!"

As for fantasy football's effect on family life (Bell competes in five leagues overall, sporting a combined record of 27-27-1), the routine is understood.

"After 33 years, Mrs. Bell knows that I go AWOL from September to January, " he said. " We pass in the hall once in awhile and say hi but she's pretty understanding."
