Monarchs win league title

The Polish Monarchs became the tenth different champion in Erie League history when they defeated the Bonecrushers last night, 83-60.

The win marks the first championship for Mike Szydlowski (right), who now sports an overall mark of 20-13 in two Erie League seasons. This year's 11-5 showing betters the one turned in during the franchise's only other year of existence, when the Monarchs finished third overall in 1996.

As Overall League Champion, All-American Conference Champion, and White Division Champion, Szydlowski will cash in on $545. Not bad for a guy who had no intention of participating until about 30 minutes before this year's auction. That's when commissioner Kirk Pavelich, desperate to fill a last minute vacancy, managed to persuade Szydlowski to return to the league. Why Szydlowski? He happened to call as Pavelich was going out the door. The good timing for the Monarchs owner started at this point and continued for the entire 1999 season.

Bonecrushers owner Dave Bell, who closes out a fine season at 9-7, collects $250 as league runner-up and Browns Conference Champion.

The Monarchs won despite getting just two points from starting RB Curtis Enis in the run-and-shoot offense. Wide receivers Tony Martin, Amani Toomer, Germane Crowell, and Marcus Robinson combined for 43 points while QB Steve Beuerlein - the game's Most Valuable Player - chipped in with 20.

Other money earners for the 1999 season include: Bryan Vince (Psychedelic B's) $340, Joe Nunney (Black Diamond) $185, Keith Kuratko (Atomic Punks) $120, Don Jones (LTP) $95, Mike Kuratko (Hostile Omish) $75, John Thiem (Masons) $25, Jeff Sweitzer (Mad Zippers) $71, Steve Suder (PP Brains) $7, and Jody Barth (Couch Potatoes) $3.

"Thanks to all of you for another great season of fantasy football," said Erie League commissioner Kirk Pavelich. "I look forward to seeing all of you on Saturday January 8th at the rules and awards banquet. Mike - you know the tradition. You owe us a round."
