Owner Profiles: Paul Tanski

Editor's Note: This is the fourth in a series of feature stories on the men who make up the Erie Fantasy Football League.

The rookie with the least amount of experience in fantasy football still knows enough about the game to dominate out of the blocks, as is being proven by Paul Tanski's 5-1 mark with the Horn-Headed Degenerates.

A past participant in the Great Lakes One League, Tanski has also served as co-owner of the Cheesy Poofs with Jeff Gallagher in Dave Bell's Great Lakes Too League. The Poofs finished the 2001 season with a mark of 6-7, despite scoring 1,483 points. Despite averaging just over 75 points per contest, Tanski's club has found a way to win and are currently leading the Browns Conference's Graham Division by one game.

"Being a newcomer to the Erie League was kind of easy," Tanski said. "I already knew several of the, err, gentlemen. Dave Bell, Sam Profio, Bill Long, and also newcomer Doug Frank. (Commissioner) Kirk (Pavelich) runs a tight ship and the league has lots of history and enough characters to make it fun."

Tanski, 38, said the biggest adjustment to the new league has been getting used to the franchise player system.

"The only thing I'm not so keen on is the keeper portion," Tanski said. "It seems a little strange to reward a team owner that took a flyer on some rookie or backup during the draft by letting him have them again for the same outrageously low price again the next year. The rosters just aren't big enough to be drafting for the upcoming year and next. With all the injuries that can happen, I imagine it's sometimes hard to hold onto some of those picks. I prefer a clean slate each season and you get what you pay for."

A participant in three leagues this year, Tanski is also recently married.

"I just got married so my new wife doesn't have a good feel for fantasy football yet," he said. "Although, she did drop a comment on me that she thought three leagues were a bit much. She'll come around."

Despite the stellar record, Tanski knows his team needs to improve.

"This team so far has been a bit of a disappointment," he said. "I'm just not scoring points. I took a lot of chances in this draft and guys like Davis, Pittman, and Coles have not produced as I've hoped they would.  Maybe Spurrier will figure out that when you have the leading NFC rusher from last year on your team, 'you should give him the Damn Ball!' I figure as the 'Skins keep losing he'll figure that out, hopefully sooner not later.  My title chances lie with those three guys, and right now it does not look good. So far, I've been lucky, but that only goes so far, I need points and have to find a line up that will produce."
