Owner Profiles: Jody Barth
Editor's Note: This is the fifth in a series of feature stories on the men who make up the Erie Fantasy Football League. In order to be featured, you must respond to the official Erie League survey.
One
thing has remained a constant over the seven years Jody Barth has been a member
of the Erie League - no matter what he calls his team, more often than not they
find a way to win.
The current owner of the Blockheads (formerly the Couch Potatoes, Kardiac Kids, and Callouses), Barth had compiled a stellar career mark of 54-32 (.628 pct.) heading into this season. However, despite having three stud players in QB Brett Favre, RB Ricky Williams, and WR Rod Smith, Barth finds himself on the bottom of the All-American Red Division at 2-6 -- four full games in back of Keith Kuratko and the Atomic Punks.
This is my worst start in fantasy football history," Barth said. "I am looking forward to putting my name on the toilet paper. Toilet bowl bound."
Although he appears headed toward just his third losing season in seven years, Barth said he's still having fun, mostly because of the rivalries he's developed over years of trash talking.
"My biggest rival is between (Atomic Punks GM) Keith Kuratko and (LTP owner) Don Jones because Keith thinks he is the creator of fantasy football and it is nice to whoop his ass every now and then," Barth said. "Don Jones because he always runs his mouth at the draft when I choose a player and will say comments like 'I hope he plays.'"
This season, both Kuratko and Jones have knocked off Barth's Blockheads, with Kuratko's Punks pulling the trick 103-89 in Week One while Jones and LTP came away with an 89-79 Week Five victory.
Barth, who won the 1998 Erie League title by defeating Matt Rzyczycki and Captain Tripps 74-55 (click here to read the recap), said he also enjoys competing with John Thiem and the Masons. The Blockheads managed to pull out a victory when the two squared off last week as Barth's squad came away with a 99-97 overtime win -- despite playing without a quarterback.
"John Thiem is the brightest new owner because he talks shit and has no foundation to back it up," Barth said. "He's got balls, not as big as mine, but he's got balls."
The 29-year-old Twinsburg, OH. native, a University Circle police officer during the day, said he has stopped trying to explain the whole fantasy football concept to his family.
"The family thinks they are involved, they think they know what is going on," he said. "I explain it to them over and over and over again. In one ear and out the other. They don't understand, but they are big supporters of my big balls."
Barth, who has talked trash with everyone from Jones to Kuratko to Steve Suder to Bryan Vince over the years, has remained very quiet this year as his team struggles to find the win column. He said he has to get it in gear in the near future or there will be hell to pay with fiancee Kimberly.
"I love the smack that is run," Barth said. "Sorry I can't be a part of it this year because my team sucks and I know it. I love all you guys. Spend my money wisely as Kimberly will kick my ass again if I lose."
