Vigilantes win 2nd league title

Thanks to a record-setting performance by wide receiver Terrell Owens, the Midnight Vigilantes won the 2000 Fantasy Bowl over the Hostile Omish last night, 134-96.

The victory enabled Kirk Pavelich (right) to become the first owner in league history to win a second title. The nine year veteran of the league, whose record now stands at 77-58, guided the Vigilantes to 12 consecutive victories after a 2-2 start. Click for Gallery of Champions.

It was definitely a game that lived up to the hype, as the two teams combined for 230 points, eclipsing the previous mark of 183 set by the Midnight Vigilantes and Donikers in the 1995 Fantasy Bowl. In addition, the Vigilantes 134 point effort breaks the record of 103 that had been held by Pavelich's 1995 championship team.

During the playoffs, Pavelich's club scored 505 points in four games (126.25 per game) to break the post-season scoring record of 386, set by the Polish Monarchs last year.

The game's MVP, Terrell Owens (left), scored 34 points on the strength of a 20 catch, 283 yard receiving performance. The 34 points by a player broke the previous Fantasy Bowl record of 28 that had been held by QB Brett Favre and WR Tony Martin (95).

Coming into the season, Pavelich -- who will cash in on a minimum of $550 -- had developed the reputation of a gambler who liked to pull the trigger on trades. This reputation was enhanced during the year, as just three players - with kicker Mike Vanderjagt being the only starter - survived from Pavelich's opening day roster. Key players brought in through trade include QB Kurt Warner (from the Psychedelic B's for WRs Marcus Robinson and Terry Glenn), RB Jamal Lewis and WR Torry Holt (from the Masons for RB Corey Dillon and QB Daunte Culpepper), RB Mike Anderson (from the Gargoyles for WR Joe Horn), WR Cris Carter (from the Rat Bastards for RB James Allen and WR Tim Dwight), and Owens (from the Cosmic Monsters for WR Antonio Freeman and QB Brian Griese).

Hostile Omish owner Mike Kuratko, who closes out a fine season at 9-7, will collect a minimum of $250 as runner-up and Browns Conference Champion. Click to see the Fantasy Bowl 11 Preview.
