History: Commissioner Kirk Pavelich added the Consolation Tournament, also known as the Toilet Bowl Tournament, to the Erie League rule book at the start of the 1996 season. The creation of the Consolation Tournament came about thanks to Section III, Article 6 that year: "The remaining eight teams that do not qualify for the playoffs will be entered in a single-elimination competition, played during the same weeks as the Fantasy Bowl tournament. The winner of 'The Toilet Bowl Tournament' will be awarded their initial entry fee payment." For Consolation Bowl I winner Mike Kuratko, that meant receiving a check for $65. Bonecrushers GM Dave Bell received the same award for defeating Keith Kuratko's Atomic Punks in 1997. After complaints from playoff qualifiers about teams with losing records winning money, the Consolation Tournament was officially removed from the Rule Book prior to the start of the 1998 season. The Toilet Bowl returned in 1999, thanks in part to the league's expansion to 24 teams. Mad Zippers GM Jeff Sweitzer collected the $70 check for winning the '99 game.
