History of the award: At the end of the 1994 season, Commissioner Kirk Pavelich used statistical analysis to name the league's Most Valuable Player. The formula used studied which player had been most valuable to his team's efforts through consistent point production. After the '95 season, Pavelich called for the league’s owners to vote for the NFL Player that contributed the most to the success of his respective Erie League team. The honor has been voted on every year since. Starting in 1999, owners could vote for Erie League Most Valuable Player from their respective conference. This presented the possibility that two different players could win the award in a given year. The point total is derived by allowing each of the owners to make first, second, and third place votes. First place votes receive six points, second place votes receive four points, and third place votes receive two points.
